February is National Pet Denial month!... no wait, that's not right... lets try that again. February is National Pet Dental Health month! I know you brush your teeth twice and floss daily too. Anyways, like I way saying, you take care of your own teeth, but have you ever thought about your dog's teeth? Here's a scary fact: about 80% of dogs have early stages of gum disease by age three! (source)
So what is Canine Periodontists (dog gum disease)?
"It's a bacterial infection of the mouth. There are four stages of periodontal disease, progressing from plaque and mildly inflamed gums, to established gingivitis (gum disease), and then on to mild and ultimately severe periodontitis, which may involve bone and/or tooth loss." (source)
" The build-up of soft dental plaque on the surfaces of the teeth around the gums. The bacteria in dental plaque irritates the gum tissue if plaque is allowed to accumulate, which often leads to infection in the bone surrounding the teeth.." (source)
Do problems occur?
Yes, such as "soft, swollen gums, loose teeth and abscesses. All of these ailments can create bacteria buildup and a resulting infection that can become deadly if it enters the dog’s bloodstream." (source)
What can I do to prevent this disease?
Many of the websites I looked at suggested: regular teeth brushing (with specially formulated canine toothpaste, soft toothbrushes and finger brushes) which help to eliminate food build up and remove the plaque and tartar that can lead to the disease, chew toys and treats that promote healthy teeth, and having your dog's teeth and mouth looked at when he/she's at the vet.
I also feed Noah raw, frozen chicken* every once in a while and give him (uncooked) beef bones from the butcher shop to chew on to help get some of the plaque off his teeth.
A few tips when brushing your dog's teeth:
• Be very patient with your dog when brushing his/her teeth.
• Do your best to teach them that teeth brushing is fun by:
+staying positive,
+starting slowly with baby steps (think using your finger or a soft finger brush
for the first five times or so),
+and using yummy treats.
Have a healthy mouth!
